Daft Punk is back and fully reloaded with “Random Access Memories”! Considered as some of the best innovators of house music, they have been evolving and changing the EDM scene since the 1990s. They revolutionized the house movement in France, and since then they have had significant popularity around the world and back! The French duo consisting of Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter are ready to hit the stage again. While they have been working on “Human After All” (2004-2008) which had mixed reviews, mainly because of the fast and rapid release. Also they released their second live album (alive) in 2007 and won a Grammy for their single hit “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger.” After that they started work on the “Tron Legacy” soundtracks (2008-2010), the duo composed 24 tracks for “Tron”, and 11 tracks for “DJ Hero”. During that time the duo individually were admitted into the “Ordre des Arts et des Lettres” which is the rank of chevalier or knight. On February 28, 2013 Daft Punk signed to Columbia records and Sony registered 13 brand new songs. Their new album “Random Access Memories” is set to be released May 21 2013. They first released one song which is an immediate hit: “Get lucky” has over 22 million views in three weeks on YouTube alone. “Get Lucky” is their first UK no. 1 single yet, and there’s more to come.
So far “Random Access Memories” have had a bit of mixed reviews. First thing is that the album was said to be a bit messy. Secondly it’s said to have songs that are a bit too long and “useless” in a way. But overall some tracks will make you want to get up and just dance, in a disco kind of way. Though a few critics say that “Random Access Memories” has a different type of vibe and music style. It’s not what you’d expect Daft Punk to play. There are basically no drops; it’s just more of a mellow type of “Neo-Disco”. But like always daft punk strives to revolutionize EDM, and the music we listen to, the questions is: Is this album enough to do that?
The only song they have released at this time (“Get Lucky feat. Pharrell Williams”) has a very simple, mellow, and catchy beat to it. It’s very calm but it makes you want to get up and drift away. The lyrics are very catchy - though repetitive - but it has a good meaning behind them. One interpretation of the hook to this song talks about how successful they have become and they have put too much effort and productivity into their music to give up. While it drastically changes from their hard work to getting lucky in bed, or its seems so. The words have a sexual feel to them, and it’s very catchy. But maybe their hard work payoffs and they get lucky. Overall the song is fantastic. It’s already in the top twenties of the hot one hundreds.
Daft Punk’s “Random Access Memories “is due to come out May 21st with Columbia/Sony. Everybody seems very eager to get the chance to listen to the whole album and there is good reason behind it. Okay… So when you’ve been doing this thing awhile, you see things come and go. If you’re pro, there will ALWAYS be a time when you eventually sell your creative soul to the devil for whatever it is that motivates you at the moment to do what you do. The Rolling Stones have done it. The Beatles have done it. Even The Doors have done it. So why is it so shocking that Daft Punk has done it? The album itself is genius in nature. That’s the greatness of it. It’s subtlety that is more often than not overlooked in this swag society. The album is pure disco funk and I applaud them for taking that route. It takes some moxy to come out with a highly publicized, highly anticipated, and highly recieved album and do exactly what you wanted to do with it. That being said, I think the list of “collaborators” combined with the hype generated by the album led itself to speculation that the group compromised on many things in order to please the label itself. Don’t get me wrong. I think in its subtlety, there’s an incredible amount of brilliance. A proverbial Eff-You to the masses that wanted to hear analog fuzz combined with an in-your-face “drop” at every fourth measure. The lack of this has those same masses blasting the release when in reality, this is Daft Punk. If you listen to earlier releases, this is what they do. Pure disco funk is what you get from everything NOT the Tron Soundtrack.
So to my point… this is indeed their “sell out” album. By this, I would like to reference the Play album that Moby put out in 1999. This album, by dictation of the fans and electronic music followers was deemed an abomination. There were collaborations with label mate pop artists. The music was simplistic by even Moby’s standards. Oh yah… and it won a Grammy nod or two. Yet, that album wasn’t his first, it was his fifth overall. It also made him a ton of cash but in Moby’s own confessions years later, his creative downfall. Moby still puts out electronic music, not that anybody but his fans know about but further albums exist and they’re quite good, actually. But after one reaches that amount of fan fare and hype… there’s no going back.
Daft Punk may very well be at the point in their music careers. They’ve scored movies. They’ve given dance music listeners something to rave about. They’ve created a unique style that has inspired others to emulate (Deadmau5 - I’m looking at you). So sure, why not? The album may sound dull and boring to those who expected much more. For the Robot Rock innovators, it’s business as usual. Disco isn’t dead. It’s an acquired taste that needs to be digested fully to appreciate. Guys like Daft Punk simply provide the ingredients, it’s the DJs, the dancers, the groovers, and producers to make it a meal. - Dallas Martin

To ungrateful DP fans, it’s true it doesn’t sound much like Discovery(probably their best album). But people are missing the point here about this album, the EDM scene began during the 70’s, brought up by the likes of Giorgio Moroder, Donna Summers etc. What I believe Daft Punk is trying to do with this album is to remind us of the music that made them who they are today, and at the same time, bringing us back in time to appreciate the beginnings of EDM. Bringing Life Back To Music :’)

Personally, I thought Get Lucky was the weakest song on the album, the most commercial and streamlined song of them all. A simple radio hit to attract attention.
I like to think of RAM as some sort of concept album, filled with melancholy and thematically cemented in analogue experimentation. It’s really quite brilliant! Guess most people expected a follow-up to Discovery.

Touch and especially Contact for me reach a point of no longer being music, and more of listening to things that make me feel a certain way. Touch is masterfully crafted and the sentiment is heart rending. Contact is more of an experience for me.

Is it different from everything or different in the sense its Daft Punk reviving Disco and Funk? since all this hype can’t be just for a an album that just reintroduces the old golden stuff to a younger audience !! That would be a major cock flop.
Got to admit though, that if it is just songs based on a Funk and Disco format it won’t be a boundary pushing album that they their hype is claiming. Not buying the whole “It’s ahead of its time” bullshit. I liked Homework, Discovery, HAA as soon as they came out. There was no courting process. The robots are drunk on power.

I get why you would be frustrated however you should consider that they went for a different approach ever since they felt that electronica seems to be slowly losing touch of music because of how easy and “synthetic” it is to make. To be frank, everyone I know who has actually taken the time to LISTEN to RAM love it. They have a few more slower songs then I would have preferred, but I still love them all the same.
Also, they CHOSE to collaborate. How this degrades the integrity of their album at all is a bit confusing to me. Saying it is average is fine. But at least have sound criticisms.
Like what? I am only curious what you’d expect more of. They have awesome collaborations, songs that just make me want to dance, and Instant Crush and Contact both are on repeat-loop as we speak
@brutal… I understand where you are coming from. Moroder is probably the track that most sounds like the good old Daft we love. But I think if you went into this album wanting it to sound like the typical Daft Punk album, you’d be disappointed. I don’t think their purpose of this was to re-do what they’ve done. They wanted RAM to be an excursion and they talked about this quite a bit (GQ mag interview and others). Have to agree that the keyboards on this track are epic.
Coming from the house genre, sampling is something that they did to great effect. Keep in mind though that they have grown tired of the amount of sampling from dance artists these days (as stated in tons of recent interviews), thus the reason why they went with more of an analog approach to this recording. Is there still some sampling? Sure. But I feel this is the most organic album they’ve put out so far. Personally, I think the album is great! I love Instant Crush and Contact.

In all honesty, I think it is an amazing album and I don’t see why it gets all the hate. In MY opinion I think it lived up to the hype.
WARNING: Listening to this album causes intense addiction and might lead to excessive purchase of the same record in multiple formats. Other side effects : feeling the urge to eliminate whoever hates on this album.

This whole ordeal of Daft Punk changing their style reminds me of when Rush changed styles during the ’80’s from Prog Rock to more of a new wave sound. A lot of fans were divided about the whole thing, but there were still several people who were just as curious of what direction they were going.
I haven’t heard the album yet (doesn’t get released until this Tuesday here in Canada) but that snippet of music kinda reminds me of Steve miller band’s version of Fly like an eagle, love it.

I genuinely think this album is just one of those seminal albums that will be remembered for a long time. I’ve listened to it a few times and it has just blown my mind. Was not aware however that a lot of people aren’t enjoying it!

This album is too good to be degraded into mp3 on itunes. Everyone should buy the CD or LP and put life back into physical formats and forget mp3 downloads as that’s just a low-fi copy. Giorgio is a below par track for what Daft Punk can create. Compare these songs to the ones from discovery/homework and they’re so average. They tried really hard but they tried to be something they aren’t. They never made dance music like anyone else anyway, so why stop doing it? It’s a shame in todays world they feel so bored with their own style of music due to other artists that they don’t want to make the music they pioneered anymore.

Of course the vinyl is better! I have all Daft Punks output on vinyl and waiting for the LP in the post. I just had to hear the album and CD was the only thing I could purchase in the music shops here, and as I hate iTunes and all it stands for I had no choice to buy the CD. CD is a higher resolution than mp3 no doubt, but you can’t tell the difference. I always prefer vinyl every time and it’s the real thing when it comes to music!

It was released in Ireland on May 17th and I bought the CD in Golden Discs, an Irish owned chain that has been running for over 50 years and the only remaining music chain in Ireland. How dare you make the accusation that I have a pirate copy of the album when it is a legit Sony glass master copy with serial number and I.F.P.I. (LY34) and finally CD is 16bit 44.1 k wav. 1411kbps. and iTunes mp3 is 320kps! I have been buying music for over 30 years so you don’t know what you’re talking about!

You can copy a CD in it’s full file state to your Mac or PC. Most compressing software, whether it’s iTunes or whatever, will give you options on converting. On a Mac the file will be AIFF on PC it is WAV. The only snag for most people is the space this takes up, and that’s what mp3 and the like do. It takes the stuffing out of the file so you can fit more ‘music’ on a media player. The file is reduced to 25% of it’s original size with the same frequency response.

Do you mean Human After All? I was fairly disappointed with this in 2005 and after the superb Robot Rock and The Prime Time of your Life the album sounded very repetitive and lacked good ideas. It sounded like a load of half finished ideas and demos and underneath there was little substance. Maybe someday it will be a cult classic!

I’ve listened to the album a good 20 times and it still lacks the soul + musical quality I had hoped it would have. On the contrary I believe the collaborators are the only people who deliver any life into this album. Hearin Nile Rodgers work again is a breath of fresh air, and Panda Bear’s contribution is excellent. They just lack energy, soul, life. The songs Daft Punk do solely on their own are so bland, most of the songs are background music. What happened to a band who stood out so proudly?
Thank the lord someone else agrees with me. Considering all the amazing artists out there who are outputting great material every 6-12 months or so this is so below par it hurts for the amount of time they’ve spent on it. Plus they hyped it up to be a dance record when it clearly isn’t.

After 8 years…… I never buy actual CD’s/Vinyls etc. But I waited until 5/21/13 to actually *gasp* BUY the CD, noting that it was leaked before then. I honestly didn’t know what to expect from this LP, only hearing “Get Lucky” But by the time the album started, all the way to the closure…I can safely say that this was worth every cent, and then some. Hell, I plan on buying 10 more copies. It might not be Homework, but its definitely Daft Punk. And it would be wrong to say otherwise.

You know, I was a bit disappointed when I first heard their new album. But once I went back and listened to it without any expectations, just listening to it for what it was, I loved it. You should probably do the same.
to truly understand the album you have to see where Daft Punk is coming from and where electronica is today. the genre in question is where it is because of artists like the robots but they themselves are not the happiest about that, they see the lack of innovation that lack of fully realized artistry and that DJ’s in a way either don’t seem motivated enough or that they lack the tools to push EDM forward. what better way to make a statement about electro of today then the sound of the origins?
French house has it’s roots in disco, and I honestly love the blend of the two. If you liked this somewhat experimental album from DP you should try listening to “Breakbot”, another french house producer with similar sounds to DP’s new songs.
