AWOL (A Way Of Life Productions) is known for it’s deep-thinking EDM events for the past 15+ years in Vegas. Founder Chad Craig has kept innovating each year as he brought us one of the best Halloween events: Devil’s Night. His #2 headlining event each year - Halfway 2 Halloween - has come back with a bang, giving the 18 and up electronic music lovers a costumed party, great sound and visuals, custom Halloween-themed sets, great line-up and more! We attended the event this year (May 3rd 2013) and below is our experience.
When I saw that Halfway 2 Halloween is at the old warehouse at 1400 Industrial Rd., it instantly brought back memories of old-times, this venue was home of many EDM events, even in the 90s.. Being early is a good thing for parking, but there was no issues finding a place to park in the surrounding areas, streets. Security was properly done, metal-detecting and checking any bags, etc. Good for safety. After entering, we found ourselves right in the middle of the action, with a custom approx. 20 foot stage, crafted by Chad Craig and crew. This structure had lights, sound, the whole 9.. Gogo cages in front, talent on top, music blastin’, good setup. Surrounding the main stage, many vendors of party accessories, artwork and more. To the left of the stage (to my satisfaction) was a bar for the 21+, if you showed you I.D., you got a bracelet that let you enter the secluded bar area. Security was watching the entry, again, well secured. Next to the bar, you found the entry to the second stage inside.. The stage design was superb in here as well, behind the DJs, a large organ-looking metal structure awed the party people!
As the night progressed, there was no shortage of costumed EDM-heads! From gogos to hoopers, most were very creative with their outfits! Seeing convincing zombies, demons, werewolves, a dude from Fear and Loathing in a shower costume, you got it all.. “Lord Gargoyle” (Rob Hester) the body-paint artist was spraying paint on anyone interested, most of the patrons were wearing his art.
The Halfway 2 Halloween music selection was superb, headlining acts included: Dysphemic & Miss Eliza, Pelussje, a.k.a. James Nayler & Chiara Benelli, Jason Blakemore. Local mid-lining talent included: Jayrod, Sean T, Starkill, Kevin Shawn, Vegas Banger, Hellnegative and The Impostor.
DJs dropped a wide variety of music, from Dirty Dutch to Dubstep, we heard live vocals of popular tracks remixed by Pelussje, booty shakin’ basslines and raw glitch-hop tracks, there was no way you didn’t hear some bangers that made you move.
Walking around, we talked to most of the vendors, selling art and party accessories. Heavenly Sweets, TATTOOSR4US, Karla Ely’s Paintings in Glass, Thea Paisley, Lord Gargoyle and many more were offering great art and services. IndieKrush.com was out there taking pictures for the costume contest, the winner gets a 3-day EDC pass. Freaky Foundations was doing costume/body makeup. The beautiful “Main Attraction Performance Team” and “Vegas Missfitz” showed off their dancing skills in and around the cages.
We had a great time, props to AWOL and everyone who made this event happen. Can’t wait for the next one.
